A lot of people are anxious about the Coronavirus / Covid epidemic. There is a lot of misinformation about the effect of Covid on Parkinson’s patients.
Here is an excellent collection of information on the topic, from reliable sources.
In summary:
- The risk of getting the infection is almost certainly not higher in Parkinson’s patients.
- The risk of serious problems is probably not determined primarily by Parkinson’s disease – it is unclear whether Parkinson’s is important at all in determining severity.
- Other factors such as age, cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases may determine the severity of disease. These are common to all human beings and relevant in all people, and are also important for people with Parkinson’s disease.
- Infection can worsen Parkinson’s symptoms, but this worsening can be expected to be temporary.
- It is absolutely CRUCIAL – as in all other people – to STRICTLY adhere to social distancing & handwashing guidelines.
- Make sure you have a good plan for the continuation of medical treatment, and if the epidemic is prolonged – then for management of your Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) device.
- If possible, figure out a way to get in touch with your neurologist now, before you need his/her help.
I wish you the best. May God bless us during these difficult times.
